Join a Town
Your quick guide to becoming a resident and enjoying protected, community-driven gameplay with Towny.
Benefits of Joining a Town
- Build protection with claimed plots covering bedrock to sky using Towny permissions.
- Community facilities like farms, shops, inns, and shared storage.
- Collaboration on projects with neighbors and guidance from a mayor.
- Convenience via town spawn travel if public: /t spawn <town>.
- Growth perks when towns join nations (more claims/outposts, potential protections if enabled).
- Economy access with easier trading and proximity to player shops.
Caveats & Downsides
- Upkeep and taxes: Towns pay daily upkeep and may charge resident taxes from player balances.
- Mayor rules: Plot permissions and building guidelines are set by the mayor/staff.
- Inactivity risk: If the town bank cannot pay upkeep, protection can be lost until restored.
- Relocation cost: Moving towns may require unclaiming, selling plots, and travel time.
- Shared spaces: Community areas depend on plot permissions; be cautious with valuables.
- Coordination: Joining events, projects, or expansions may depend on mayor activity/timezone.
Quick Steps
- Open the in-game list of towns: /town list or /t list.
- Browse towns and pick one you like. If public spawn is enabled, click the town name in chat or use /t spawn <town>.
- Ask to join in chat or Discord, or type /t join <town> if the town allows open joining.
- Once invited, accept the invite shown in chat. You are now a resident.
Video Guide
This video covers Towns and Nations fundamentals that help you understand how joining a town works.
Town Basics
Residents: Players in a town are called residents; players without a town are nomads.
Town blocks: Claimed land cells that protect builds from bedrock to sky. Unclaimed land is wilderness.
Plots: Town blocks that can be assigned or sold to members; used for homes, farms, shops, jails, inns, etc.
Money: Servers use an economy. Costs include plots, outposts, upkeep. Check prices via /towny prices.
Upkeep: Daily town upkeep is taken from the town bank. If unpaid, protection can be lost.
Outposts: Separate claimed areas away from the main town; cost more than adjacent plots.
Nation benefits: Joining a nation can increase claim limits, outposts, protection, and may adjust upkeep.
